Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi admits he can see himself at the club beyond the summer, and is happy to be rebuilding his relationship with the fans.

Mikel Arteta’s side battled their way to a 1-0 win away at Olympiacos on Thursday night, keeping their third consecutive clean sheet in all competitions.

World Cup winner Mustafi was a big part of the performance in Greece, and has been the Spaniard’s first-choice defender since becoming head coach in December.

The German was previously unsettled at the club after former boss Unai Emery made it clear he wasn’t in his first team plans.

When asked after the Europa League victory if he could now stay in north London, Mustafi told Yahoo Sports: ‘Why not? I have always taken things day-to-day.

‘We had a game on Thursday, we have the next important game at the weekend and as long as I am playing for a club – it doesn’t matter which one – I play now for Arsenal and played before for previous ones.

‘I always gave everything until the last minute and when I decide or when the club and I decide it is going to continue I am happy to continue, if not then we have to go forward.’

27-year-old Mustafi has endured a fractious relationship with the Gunners supporters, at one point having to quit social media due to abuse from trolls.

After being involved in six of eight Premier League games since Mikel Arteta’s arrival, putting in improved displays, he seems to have won back sections of the Arsenal faithful.

He added: ‘It is always important to have a good relationship with the fans but for me the main thing was to be professional.

‘To always be there for my team-mates and for the club and then obviously when you play well they appreciate your performances but it makes it easier when you have the fans behind you, back supporting you so I am happy for that.’
