Several people have been injured in central Vienna amid exchanges of fire, the police said late on Monday, after a newspaper reported an attack on a synagogue.
“Shots fired in the Inner City district – there are persons injured – KEEP AWAY from all public places or public transport,” the police said on Twitter.
The editor of newspaper Falter said one person had been killed, citing the interior ministry, which was not immediately available for comment.
“There are several injured persons,” police said tweeted. “We are on site with all available forces. Please avoid all public squares in the city.”
Austrian public broadcaster ORF cited witnesses as saying that several shots were fired shortly after 8pm (1900 GMT). The police operation was taking place in the centre of Vienna, close to the river Danube.
