Secret Cinema fans ‘disappointed’ with Bridgerton as the next event: ‘This choice is so poor it’s insulting’

Secret Cinema has been criticised for choosing Bridgerton as its next event, with social media followers bowing out of attending a period drama-themed ball.

As clues were dropped on Instagram and Twitter from Monday, fans of the popular immersive theatre event company analysed every snippet shared, and guesses included Alice in Wonderland and Pride and Prejudice (clocking the 1813 reference).

A few were feeling The Matrix, reading a connection to the film’s red pill and blue bill in the caption, and another clue – an opening door at the top of a stone staircase – prompted guesses including Resident Evil, The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut and The Hunger Games

However, the online dissent started then another clue showing a Regency ball in full swing through a keyhole was released.

‘Aw come on guys, you can do better than this?’, wrote one frustrated fan, while another commented: ‘Very disappointing choice. Not going to go to this one. Snooze 😴.’

Supporters who had recently given money to Secret Cinema also aired their annoyance publicly, with one blasting: ‘So you could’ve given us all something to look forward to after lockdown but you bring us this. Yeah I’ll be pulling my investment. Disappointing.’

The company has had great past success with its signature blend of screening and extended live-action theatre events, with past seasons’ secret worlds revolving around films like Casino Royale, Blade Runner and Baz Luhrmann’s take on Shakespeare with Romeo + Juliet.

But for many fans, it seems Bridgerton was not the event they wanted, despite the series’ overwhelming success for Netflix, which saw 82 million subscribers tuning in and making it the platform’s most-watched show ever in January.

‘Please not Bridgerton!’, wrote one user while another commented: ‘I really hope this isn’t bl***y Bridgerton.’

‘Hope not Bridgerton. Can I still hold out hope for the Shining?!’, pleaded another follower while a fourth bluntly wrote: ‘If it’s Bridgerton expect to sell about 4 tickets.’

Thursday’s confirmation of Bridgerton had Lady Whistledown announcing the news and inviting followers to secure their invitation to ‘the one ball of the year where anything goes’.

One angry fan fumed: ‘Please stop promoting this. Its twisting the knife. I was so excited to get back to secret cinema. I went to moulin rouge and it was INCREDIBLE. This choice is so poor its insulting.’

With fan reaction including other comments such as ‘Possibly the most disappointing news I’ve ever heard’, it seems as though Secret Cinema’s foray into the world of period drama is an unpopular move for some of its more sci-fi and horror-leaning fans, who have enjoyed entering the worlds of 28 Days Later and Star Wars in previous years.

Secret Cinema has used a Netflix property previously as in its last event ahead of lockdown it invited audiences to Hawkins, Indiana and into the world of Stranger Things in late 2019 and early 2020.

However, not all fans were put off by the idea of donning their historical glad rags and becoming the talk of the ton.

‘This world is going to be stunning, can’t wait!’, wrote one follower next to the announcement post.

Another said: ‘If it’s even close to the atmosphere of Moulin Rouge it’s going to be amazing…. SC so know how to do historical with a twist…’

Metro.co.uk has contacted Secret Cinema for comment.

Tickets for the season will be released on July 6, and you can register to join the waiting list here. The event will run Tuesday – Friday from 10 November 2021.
