Scott McTominay will become a Manchester United legend, reckons Nemanja Matic

Scott McTominay has everything it takes to become a Manchester United legend, believes his thoroughly impressed team-mate, Nemanja Matic.

The 23-year-old has missed much of the last three months with a serious knee injury, but has still managed to firmly establish himself in manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans this season.

The midfielder was a key figure in the United starting XI until he suffered that knee problem and was pushing for his place again before the coronavirus hiatus, spectacularly scoring in the Premier League win over Manchester City at the start of March.

Matic has been playing in his position while McTominay recovered from his injury, but despite the competition for places in the United midfield, the 31-year-old says he is happy to give the younger man advice, and expects huge things from him in the years to come.

‘We are always talking, especially when he started to play in the first team, but now he’s a proper senior player he plays like he’s had 10 years in the first team,” Matic told the official Manchester United website. ‘With him, we don’t have any problems.

‘I think he will be a very important player for Manchester United in the next 10 years or more. He is the kind of player and person that you always want to have in the changing room.

‘[He’s] very professional, with a lot of quality in the legs. His mentality is what Manchester United needs to have, so I think that with any coach, in any club he will fit very well.

‘I’m happy for him and United that they have a player like that in the team. He just needs to continue how he’s been working until now and I’m sure he will be one of the Manchester United legends one day.’

Manchester United’s central midfield had appeared something of a problem area not too long ago, but there is now plenty of competition for places in the middle of the park.

The emergence of McTominay, the vast improvements in Fred’s game and the sensational impact of new signing Bruno Fernandes are all huge plusses for Solskjaer.

Meanwhile, Paul Pogba may still return to first team action after his ongoing ankle problem and Matic has also been performing admirably in recent months.

It remains likely there will be investment in the midfield in the summer though, whenever that may be, with an £80m deal for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish looking probable.
