Paul Scholes has perfectly explained why Manchester United would struggle to follow Liverpool’s lead when it comes to recruitment.
Michael Edwards is Liverpool’s transfer guru and he has been credited with helping the club get some very important deals over the line in recent years.
United have no equivalent, but have been linked with a director of football for some time, with Edwin van der Sar named as a possible recruit.
Owen Hargreaves is a huge fan of Edwards and believes United should look to sign someone to help with recruitment.
“I think you just look at Michael Edwards, what he’s doing at Liverpool, the job he’s done,” Hargreaves explained on BT Sport.

“The guy is putting on a clinic every summer in how to sign a player. Look at [Diogo] Jota, who has come in, the impact that he’s had.
” Liverpool had a really good team before Alisson came in and [Virgil] van Dijk, but you don’t need much then you go and sign one there, one there.
“You go from being a good team to a great team then add Fabinho, Thiago [Alcantara]. I just think that is the model, so I think you need that guy.
“It’s not just about the coach. They’ve tried [Louis] van Gaal, they’ve tried [Jose] Mourinho. I think Ole now, give him time.
“But they’ve got to sort that side out, the recruitment is the only thing that’s going to bridge the gap.”
A director of football could certainly help United make more considered purchases, which could lead to them closing the gap on Liverpool.
But Red Devils legend Scholes believes the club needs to work out what kind of player is a “United player” before bringing in a director of football.
Currently, United have no obvious style of play, and this could make identifying targets very difficult for a transfer guru.
Scholes said: “The big trouble United have at the minute I think is they haven’t really got a way of playing. They change from week to week so how can they find a player?
“Say they play 4-3-3 every week, they can find the type of player. I can find two wide players. That’s the big difference with Sir Alex. He knew exactly the way he was going to play so he could buy the right types of players.
“It’s virtually impossible for a chief scout or director of football because you have no idea what sort of player you want.”
