The 31st annual Gotham Independent Film Awards were held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City Monday night.

Ruth Negga came into the evening as a nominee for the gender-neutral Outstanding Supporting Performance award for her role in the acclaimed black-and-white drama film, Passing.

Ahead of the ceremony, the Ethiopian-Irish actress showed off her fashion sense on the red carpet in a full-length, black-patterned dress.

The number appeared to be adorned with a striking assortment of flowers from head-to-toe. 

The design incorporated long-sleeves and a full neckline that included a mini turtleneck of sorts. 

Negga, 39, matched the piece with a pair of black heels, and had her raven tresses styled short, above the ears, with plenty of natural curls.

For the Outstanding Supporting Performance award, Negga faced competition from fellow nominees: Marlee Matlin (CODA), Troy Kotsur (CODA), Gaby Hoffmann (C’mon C’mon), Colman Domingo (Zola), Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter), and Reed Birney (Mass).

In Passing, which is based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Nella Larsen, Negga portrays Clare Bellew, an African-American woman who passes as White and has married a wealthy White man.

The title, Passing, refers to African-Americans who had skin color light enough to be perceived as white.

English actress Rebecca Hall helped the project in her directorial debut.

Along with Negga, the film also stars Tessa Thompson, André Holland, Bill Camp, Alexander Skarsgård, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy, and Ashley Ware Jenkins.

Negga’s best known for her performances in the films Breakfast on Pluto (2005),Isolation (2005), Loving (2016), Ad Astra (2019), and the AMC television series Preacher (2016-2019). 

The film had a limited theatrical release on October 27, 2021, before dropping on Netflix November 10.
