RuPaul’s Drag Race star Darienne Lake has reflected on being diagnosed with cancer during lockdown.

The 48-year-old revealed last month that she was diagnosed with melanoma after discovering a mole on her leg while self-isolating.

And after having surgery to remove the cancer, Darienne has assured fans going through the illness: ‘You’re going to survive.’

The queen, real name Greg Meyer, told SurvivorNet: ‘No matter how bad it is, even if your diagnosis is much worse than mine, you are going to pull through it.

‘You’re going to get the help and you’re going to survive. You’re going to be one of those people who can then share your message with the world on how you’re survived and thrived.’

Lake, who came fourth on season six of Drag Race, was quarantining early in the pandemic when she noticed a mole on her leg.

After sending a picture to her sister and consulting a dermatologist, Lake underwent a biopsy and discovered it was melanoma.

She wrote on Instagram: ‘Story time: over the last few months I’ve noticed a mole on my leg. I had a biopsy done and it’s positive for melanoma (cancer) I had surgery 2 weeks ago to take out more tissue, and lymph nodes to make sure it didn’t spread.

‘Good news is that the doctors got it all before it could spread. I have a couple of gnarly scars. I didn’t want to say anything to anyone until I heard the diagnosis.’

Lake shared a picture of a scar on her thigh post-surgery, and added: ‘Just my luck to live somewhere where the sun shines 12 days a year and I get skin cancer. But, things look good and if I smell like sunscreen from now on, you’ll know why.

‘2020 is a c***, but I’m a bigger c***. Not today, cancer. Not today.’

Darienne appeared on the sixth season of Drag Race in 2014, and made it to the second-last episode, when she was eliminated following a lip sync with eventual winner Bianca Del Rio, Adore Delano and Courtney Act.
