Ruben Loftus-Cheek injury could see Chelsea star sidelined for a year

Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s ruptured Achilles could keep him out of action for up to a year, if the worst fears of Chelsea medical staff are confirmed.

The 23-year-old limped out of Chelsea’a friendly with New England Revolution in Boston on Wednesday after suffering significant damage to his foot and leaving the Gillette Stadium on crutches and wearing a protective boot.

The poorly-timed friendly comes less than two weeks away from the Europa League final and three weeks before England’s Nations League semi-final against Netherlands.

The midfielder will miss both these contests and could miss an awful lot more football, depending on the results of assessments over the next couple of days.

The Sun report that the best case scenario is six months out for Loftus-Cheek, while a year out of action is not out of the question.

This means that we could not see the Lewisham man back until the back end of 2019 at the earliest, with a return in November or December a possibility.

It is a similar injury suffered by Chelsea team-mate Callum Hudson-Odoi, who is set to miss the start of next season as a result.

England manager Gareth Southgate announced his Nations League squad on Thursday afternoon and both crocked Chelsea stars were absent.

However, Southgate said: ‘We’re really looking forward to the opportunity to finish the summer off. A great chance to build on the last 12 months. A little bit larger squad than usual. We’ve got a lot of unknowns.

‘Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek would have definitely been in the squad [had they not been injured].’
