Roy Keane hails ‘brilliant’ Luke Shaw as Manchester United draw at Liverpool

Roy Keane felt the Manchester United defence was ‘brilliant’ in the goalless draw with Liverpool on Sunday, picking out Luke Shaw as the standout performer at left-back.

The huge game was not a particularly memorable one, with Liverpool having a lot of possession but creating very few chances with it.

The Red Devils actually created the two clearest chances of the contest, with both Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba forcing good saves from Alisson Becker late in the game.

It was the defences rather than the attacks that came out on top, though, and Keane thought Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s back four put in an exceptional shift against the champions.

In particular, it was Shaw who caught the eye as he kept Mohamed Salah very quiet and also offered a threat going forward, setting up the excellent second half chance for Fernandes.

‘I wouldn’t be too critical of United I thought United showed a good mentality,’ Keane told Sky Sports.

‘I thought the back four – which always worries me – were brilliant. They really were. I know they gave up one or two chances in the first half-an-hour.

‘I thought Shaw was again brilliant, defensively and going forward.’

Shaw himself admitted that morale was not particularly high at the end of the contest, with the missed chances leaving the United players feeling that they had wasted a chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League.

‘It’s a bit flat in the dressing room,’ Shaw told the BBC. ‘They had the majority of the ball but we all felt we could have won the game. They had chances but not clear-cut like ours.

‘A point is better than none. We didn’t start well and we were on the back foot straight away. We dug in and created good chances.’
