Charlie Watts will be honoured with a heartfelt tribute at the Isle of Wight Festival.

The Rolling Stones star died last month, with tributes pouring in from around the world.

Now, the Isle of Wight Festival will honour the late drummer, with festival boss John Giddings confirming there are plans for a tribute after the band played there in 2007 in an iconic set where they were joined by Amy Winehouse.

It’s expected a photo of Watts will be projected onto the main stage.

Giddings said: ‘We have been talking about doing something. I mean it’s just so sad…he was such a great bloke.’

He added to The Mirror: ’I am not sure it’s the Rolling Stones without him but they will continue on for the rest of their lives. I mean they are the best rock band in the world bar none. They get better every time I see them.’

It was recently announced that Watts has died aged 80, surrounded by friends and family.

In a statement shared with PA, the musician’s publicist said: ‘It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts.

‘He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family.

‘Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones one of the greatest drummers of his generation.

‘We kindly request that the privacy of his family, band members and close friends is respected at this difficult time.’

His bandmates have been sharing sweet tributes since the news broke, but it was reported that they were unable to attend his funeral due to Covid-19 restrictions.

It’s said the band are deep in rehearsals in Boston ahead of their US tour, meaning they weren’t able to travel back to the UK to pay their respects in person.

Watts is survived by wife Shirley Ann Shepherd, their daughter Seraphina, and granddaughter Charlotte.
