Roberto Firmino has suggested that Virgil van Dijk’s was partly responsible for Alisson’s costly mistake in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Leicester City on Saturday.

Firmino doubled Liverpool’s lead after Sadio Mane had put Jurgen Klopp’s side in front in the 10th minute.

But Leicester were gifted a lifeline due to Alisson’s failure to clear the ball.

The Brazilian was forced to scramble wide of his goal after Van Dijk’s wayward backpass, but instead of kicking the ball up the pitch, the Liverpool goalkeeper attempted to trick his way past Kelechi Iheanacho.

The Leicester striker managed to dispossess Alisson and played the ball across Liverpool’s goal for Rachid Ghezzal to score from close range.

Alisson has already admitted to his mistake but was keen to highlight Van Dijk’s role in the build-up to his error.

And Firmino agrees with his fellow Brazilian that the Dutchman should share some of the blame.

‘The pass [from Van Dijk] was not all that either,’ Firmino told ESPN Brasil.

‘Alisson tried to fix it, but unfortunately it went wrong.

‘He has made an excellent start [at Liverpool].’
