Robert De Niro has been forced to work at an ‘unsustainable pace’ in recent years in order to pay for his estranged wife’s lavish lifestyle.
The 77-year-old veteran actor, whose Hollywood career spans over five decades, has had no choice but to take every project offered to him in order to support ex Grace Hightower.
According to Robert’s lawyer Caroline Strauss, who spoke at a court hearing on April 16, The Irishman star’s estranged wife has a ‘thirst for Stella McCartney’ that she expected Robert to fund.
“While he loves his craft, he should not be forced to work at this prodigious pace because he has to,” Strauss said during the virtual hearing for the divorce case, according to Page Six.
The lawyer added: “When does that stop? When does he get the opportunity to not take every project that comes along and not work six-day weeks, 12-hour days so he can keep pace with Ms Hightower’s thirst for Stella McCartney? He could get sick tomorrow, and the party’s over.”
Robert and Grace got married in 1997 before the pair confirmed their separation in 2018.
The pair had also signed a prenup in which the actor agreed to pay Grace $1million a year as long as he was earning over $15million. However, the former couple has since been embroiled in an ongoing divorce case and have locked horns over how much Robert should pay Grace before the prenuptial agreement comes into action.
While at the height of Robert’s career the actor was said to be worth around £350 million, his lawyers have claimed that he has fallen on difficult times in recent years.

During the hearing, Grace’s lawyer, Kevin McDonough, denied that his client had been excessively spending on items such as diamond rings.
McDonough hit back by claiming Robert actually travels to brunch meetings by helicopter and charter private jets for other gatherings around the country.
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Matthew Cooper seemed far from impressed about the bickering between the millionaire former couple.
He said: “I want to get these parties divorced. I want to get Ms Hightower and Mr De Niro to go their separate ways. They will still come out of this richer than almost any human being who walks this earth.
