Rio Ferdinand sends message to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over £100m Declan Rice transfer

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes his former club should be prioritising moves for a centre-back and a right-winger this summer ahead of a £100million move for West Ham ace Declan Rice.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a huge admirer of the England international and has identified him as a solution to United’s problems in defensive midfield.

The Norwegian often paired Scott McTominay and Fred together last term but he wants to deploy one defensively-sound midfielder in order to play a more attacking brand of football.

Rice, 22, is reportedly keen on a move to Old Trafford but the Hammers value him at close to £100m – which would break the Red Devils’ transfer record.

Ferfinand is similarly fond of Rice and feels United would be buying a player that could spend a decade or more at the Theatre of Dreams.

However, he believes Solskjaer should have other priorities this summer; namely at centre-back and the right flank.

‘With a position like Declan’s, it’s more: do Man United feel he’s an absolute need right now? Are there other areas in the team where they have a bigger desire to recruit for?’ Ferdinand told the FIVE YouTube channel.

‘I think centre-back, 100%, and I think right wing, 100%. West Ham fans are going mad on social media by the way, they’re hammering me like, “Why you saying Man United should by him?!” I was asked a question and I answered the question honestly. If Man United act on my information and my say-so, then so be it.

‘I think whoever buys Declan Rice buys someone who’s going to be there and committed for 10 years, giving you top-quality service, and someone who will be a driver of the right culture at your football club. That’s what you’re buying. And obviously a player who’s still go levels to grow in his game, and who’s hungry.’

United are confident of sealing an £80m move for Jadon Sancho but the deal is likely to wait until after the European Championships.

Similarly, the Red Devils are keen on signing Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier but the pair both want to focus on the tournament before solving their futures.

United are open to offers for Jesse Lingard, Diogo Dalot, Phil Jones and Brandon Williams.
