Rio Ferdinand thinks Manchester City are well placed to go deep in the Champions League but says Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are the biggest threats to their hopes of European glory.

Ferdinand, the former Manchester United centre-half, watched on as City comfortably strolled past Borussia Monchengladbach.

Goals from Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus wrapped up a routine 2-0 win for the Premier League leaders, who are in a strong position to reach the quarter-finals with a home leg to come.

Given City’s dominance in the Premier League, many are tipping them to finally go all the way in Europe’s premier competition.

But Ferdinand thinks both PSG and Bayern can cause them issues in the later rounds.

‘I think Bayern have got the experience and the quality,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport after the match. ‘But I think Paris Saint-Germain as well.

‘In having the two wide players or your two cheating and saying to Man City, “are you going to commit”? Not cheating, asking questions.

‘Asking, tactically, will you stay back or will you keep shooting forwards in a shootout?

‘If you’re playing against a team with the likes of Mbappe and Neymar in a shootout, you’re dicing with it there.

‘It would be good. It would be interesting to see if we can get it.’

Former Manchester City midfielder Owen Hargreaves certainly can’t see them failing to win the Premier League title, with City holding a 10-point lead over second-placed Manchester United.

‘I don’t see it,’ said Hargreaves. ‘They can only stop themselves with mistakes and injuries.

‘I don’t see that happening in the Premier League.’

City boss Pep Guardiola rejected any suggestion that his side are the tournament favourites.

‘When I see Bayern Munich I don’t think we are favourites,’ he told BT Sport. ‘My target is West Ham in three days.

‘If people say we are favourites we have to accept it, but a team who in their whole history has been a semi-final once OK, they say it, we have to accept it.’
