Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has warned the club’s board this summer’s transfer window is ‘massive’ and they can’t afford to get it wrong.

The Red Devils were beaten by Villarreal in the final of the Europa League final after David De Gea missed in sudden death in a penalty shootout.

The defeat means Solskjaer is yet to win silverware as manager of the club in his two-and-a-half-year stint and he’ll be in the last year of his contract next season.

There can be no more excuses for United’s inability to challenge for the Premier League title but Ferdinand believes now there is a big pressure on the board to come through with the players Solskjaer needs.

‘This window is massive, it’s a massive window for United now,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport. The recruitment team, the owners, the CEO, the manager, the staff need to go out and recruit the right players that fit the bill, to take this team from getting to finals and can’t get over the line, to finishing the job.

‘It needs to be the right people, the right characters, and good enough players that add value to this team. For instance, we always talk about Virgil van Dijk being the catalyst for Liverpool over the last few years. What had he won in England before?

‘He was at Southampton, they weren’t fighting for titles or in Europe. It’s the right characters, the right people who fit the team, the right profile to take you on and make the team better.’

Solskjaer said after the defeat that his side need ‘two or three’ players in the transfer window to improve the side.

United are keen on signing Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, while Solskjaer is interested in West Ham defensive midfielder Declan Rice.

A centre-back is also considered a priority, with United looking for a partner for Harry Maguire.
