Rio Ferdinand believes Harry Kane is a better fit for Manchester City than Erling Haaland, believing the Tottenham star must seek a fresh challenge at the end of the season.

Kane is halfway through a six-year contract with Spurs with the striker keen to leave the club this summer, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Both United and City have long been linked with the England international and both would be expected to smash their transfer records to stand any chance of prising him away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Ferdinand meanwhile is eager to see his former side make a move and believes Kane owes it to himself to join a club challenging for trophies.

‘I’d love him to come to Man United, Harry you know that, I love you, I want you to come to my team and I think he would suit Man United,’ Ferdinand told Vibe with Five.

‘But I just think for him that he can’t sit there and do that [stay]. Harry Kane’s a winner. The best players go to the best leagues and win the biggest trophies. Harry Kane is one of them players in waiting.

‘He’s got to strike while the iron is hot, you can’t sit and wait for these things. He’s played in the new stadium, that was the reason why he stayed before, gotta go now.’

Ferdinand added however Kane may be a better fit for City, even more so than Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland, who is also on the radar of both Manchester clubs.

‘I think Harry Kane, he probably suits City better than anyone because he can play that deep-lying nine.

‘He doesn’t have to play up there, Haaland plays as an out and out nine. Harry Kane can drop in and add that extra number in midfield that Pep wants.

‘But if I’m Manchester United, Chelsea, City in the Premier League, I’d snap your hand off for Harry Kane like I would for Haaland and [Kylian] Mbappe.’
