Kaiser Chiefs lead singer Ricky Wilson has faced backlash from anti-vaxxers and TV nutritionist Gillian McKeith over comments made during a recent performance.
The Twitter spat comes after Ricky called out the names of the Covid-19 vaccinations – Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca – during his group’s Isle of Wight performance, with the shoutouts met with huge cheers.
The frontman then shouted: “Let’s hear it for the anti-vaxxers.”
This was loudly booed by the crowd of music fans.
Posting footage of Ricky comments, one Twitter user described the band as a ‘cult’. Some told Ricky they no longer considered themselves Kaiser Chiefs fans and that the musician had actively caused unnecessary division.
In response to the backlash, Ricky said: “I thought that the virus was frightening, but the dedicated velocity of the ‘Vaccine Risk Aware’ community is swift, personal, harsh, expletive ridden and effective.
“They win fair and square. Twitter is yours.”
One person who had an issue with Ricky’s actions was Gillian McKeith.
Elsewhere, Kaiser Chiefs had to stop their big Yorkshire homecoming gig when someone in the audience suffered a medical emergency.
It happened during Ricky Wilson’s band’s headline performance at The Piece Hall in Halifax earlier this month.
Kaiser Chiefs dedicated the last two songs of their set to the emergency services. This was met by a loud round of applause from the thousands in the audience.
