Resident Evil 8 rumoured for 2021 release, many ‘purists’ will hate it

A credited source is claiming that Resident Evil 8 will release next year and will have more of a focus on the occult.

Fans of Capcom’s zombie-filled survival horror series are no doubt currently enjoying the remake of Resident Evil 3, but it has been a while since we’ve seen a completely original title rather than a redo of a pre-existing one.

If new rumours are anything to go by, we could be seeing a new entry some time in 2021. This is according to AestheticGamer on Twitter, who claims to have information about Resident Evil 8.

Most of the details shared match up with leaked info from January, such as the fact that it will be a first-person title like Resident Evil 7.

The previous info also said that the game will begin in a snowy village area and feature new werewolf enemies, but AestheticGamer has claimed that while that was true, it’s become outdated due to Capcom making changes to the game to make it more of a ‘mainline’ entry.

Apparently, it began development as a third Revelations title but positive reception from testers led to Capcom deciding to refurbish it as Resident Evil 8.

It was also previously stated that Resident Evil 7’s protagonist, Ethan Winters, would be returning alongside series regular Chris Redfield, but that info is now ambiguous as AestheticGamer says they’ve heard that’s been changed.

It’s unclear whether it means both were intended to be the lead protagonists and have been swapped out or they’ve just had their designs changed. AestheticGamer calls it ‘Schrodinger’s Ethan’ and that we won’t know for sure who the player character is until an official announcement.

That said, the game will still be taking some big departures from the series in terms of the story and enemies, to the point where ‘purists’ will apparently hate it. For example, there will be a heavy focus on occultism and hallucinations, which sounds reminiscent of the original designs for Resident Evil 4.

This does match up with statements from last week, but Resident Evil 7 also diverted from a lot of series trends and went on to become a critical and commercial success, so maybe fans will be more accepting of Resident Evil 8 too.

As for when this game will purportedly be announced, that remains unclear. AestheticGamer believes that it should happen within the next few months and that Capcom intended to announce it at E3 this year, which obviously had to be changed following E3’s cancellation.
