Let’s face it, in the world of Hollywood, it’s pretty rare to find a star who hasn’t caved into Instagram these days. Even for late-starters like Jennifer Aniston (whose account incidentally broke because she gained too many followers in too short a time), it’s proved to be the best platform to promote a new film or project.
Not everyone agrees though. Renée Zellweger recently revealed during a Hollywood actresses round-table interview with the Los Angeles Times that she’s not planning on joining Instagram anytime soon (despite the fact that the @ReneeZellweger has been held for her by the social media giant).
The actress said while she has considered it, her upbringing has ultimately influenced her decision.
“I think about this a lot. And I think about the way that I grew up and the way that I was raised,” she said. “My parents are very private people. And we didn’t talk about family things out in public. And I just feel uncomfortable with it.”
Zellweger added, “I think our generation is probably the last to have some expectation of privacy. And so it’s a peculiar thing when it doesn’t occur to the younger generation that it’s not weird at all to pull out your phone and take a picture of somebody a foot from their face without saying hello, because that’s just the nature of things these days. And it’s perfectly normal. And I get that. I completely understand it. And I have no problem with it.”
There’s no denying Zellweger has fiercely guarded her private life keeping it, well, private, in turn keeping herself out of the gossip columns for most of her career, rarely attending red carpet events unless promoting her own films. W Magazine revealed that the actress has only made one public appearance in seven years.
Jennifer Lopez, who was among the actresses at the round table interview, believed that those celebrities who are on Instagram need to act accordingly.
“I feel like there is a responsibility when you’re a public person. You can’t get around it. I know we all want to be like, “just want to be me” and I just want to do this and I just want to do that. And I don’t care what people say or think. But we have to because we care what people say. And so it’s just about being your best self,” said Lopez.
We couldn’t agree more.
