Reese Witherspoon has recalled the moment ex-husband Ryan Phillippe made an awkward joke about her earning more than him, admitting the moment wasn’t scripted.

The incident in question happened at the Academy Awards in 2002, when the then-married couple took to the stage to present the award for Best Make-Up to The Lord Of The Rings together.

Reese asked Ryan on stage whether she could read the winner’s name out, to which Ryan responded: ‘You make more [money] than I do. Go ahead!’

The actress, 44, addressed the moment om the HFPA In Conversation podcast, revealing: ‘You’re reminding me of that! I forgot that ever happened. But you’re right, he did say that, and no, it wasn’t scripted.’

She admitted that Ryan, 46, had left her ‘a little bit flummoxed in the moment, too’, after the unexpected remark.

Reese added: ‘There’s so few women that make a lot of money that sometimes they’re shamed for it, and sometimes they are expected to give more and do more and be more to others in the same position that, say, a male movie star would not be expected to…

‘But I do think gender norms have changed quite a bit since that moment in 2000 or something.’

Reese and Ryan were married from 1999 until 2008 and were co-stars in Cruel Intentions together, and share daughter Ava, 21, and son Deacon, 17.

The actress also revealed that Ava once came home from school in tears after a classmate had told her that Reese was ‘one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood’.

While the comment from the classmate left Ava ‘so embarrassed’, Reese told her to never ‘feel ashamed of a woman making money’.

She explained that she told her daughter: ‘There are women all over this world who don’t have an opportunity or an education or the ability to make money.

‘So don’t ever feel bad about your mom making money. And don’t ever feel bad if you make money, and don’t be embarrassed or ashamed if its more than your partner.’
