A REBOOT of an iconic 80s model has been crowned the best-selling EV in the UK market for fourth time in just one year.

The French firm’s electric vehicle sales have surged by 71 per cent since last year as well.

According to new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the SMMT, the Renault 5 has topped the UK EV charts for private buyers four times since its release.

The funky hatchback was named the UK’s best-selling EV in retail for the months of April, October and November.

In January this year, the R5 has taken the crown for the best sales in EV category once again.

Renault has also registered 71 per cent more electric cars in January this year than it did in last year.

Adam Wood, Managing Director of Renault UK, said: “Renault’s range of electric cars stand out for their striking design, cutting-edge technology and everyday practicality, all at a great price, now enhanced by the Government’s Electric Car Grant.

“Our rise is proof that when you offer compelling cars that appeal to the heart and head, UK car buyers are increasingly happy to switch to EV, and once they do, they rarely look back.”

With its retro looks, fun-to-drive feel and realistic price tag, the Renault 5 is attracting buyers well beyond the usual EV crowd.

But despite its buzz, the R5 and other electric models couldn’t crack January’s overall top‑10 sellers.

The electric car market has hit the brakes with sales only rising by 0.1 per cent after buyers rushed in early to dodge new electric car taxes that kicked in from April.

However, the government’s Electric Car Grant has been credited with boosting some interest – with Renault models that qualify including the Renault 4, Renault 5, Scenic, Megane E-Tech and even their Alpine A290.
