Ralph Hasenhuttl responds to speculation he could be Manchester United’s next manager

Ralph Hasenhuttl insists he has paid no attention to speculation linking him with the manager’s job at Manchester United and believes he is in the process of ‘building something special’ with Southampton.

The former RB Leipzig boss arrived at St Mary’s almost two years ago with the Saints deep in relegation trouble. The Austrian successfully preserved Southampton’s top flight status in his first six months at the helm and, on a modest budget, has since turned the south coast club into top six contenders.

Indeed, after victory over Newcastle earlier this month, Southampton went top of the table for the first time in Premier League history. Hasenhuttl’s men, currently fifth in the table having gone seven games without a defeat, entertain United on Sunday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has gone some way to steadying the ship following back to back defeats against Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir and now looks secure in a role that Hasenhuttl was being linked with.

Addressing those links, Hasenhuttl said in his pre-match press conference: ‘It is not really something I listen to. I find myself listening to the radio when they talk about football it is interesting to hear. My only interest is what happens at this club.

‘I signed a long-term contract, the way we are improving this club gives me so much joy. I think there is something special growing here.’

Solskjaer, meanwhile, is under no illusion as to the task facing his side this weekend as they aim to record a fourth straight win in all competitions.

He said: ‘It is similar to when Jurgen came to Liverpool. He likes pressing, front foot, aggressive.

‘They are difficult to play against if you dwell on the ball. Very interesting to watch their progress under Ralph. I an a big admirer of the physical attributes they have in their team.’
