Ralf Rangnick has made several new arrivals to his backroom staff at Man Utd with one of them, Sascha Mense, being Timo Werner’s girlfriend’s father amid links with the German
Ralf Rangnick has strengthened his power base at Manchester United – by bringing in a 75-year-old engineer AND the father of Timo Werner’s girlfriend to work alongside him at Old Trafford.
Rangnick, who made American coach Chris Armas the first new member of his backroom staff earlier this week, is being joined by mentor Helmut Gross and sports psychologist Sascha Mense.
Gross is the man who helped Rangnick develop his football philosophy when they worked together in the youth system at Stuttgart 30 years ago.
He advised the United boss when he was appointed technical director of RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg in 2012.
Gross, who was an engineer who specialised in the construction of bridges before moving into football coaching, will not be officially employed by United.

He has been living in England to be close to his daughter – but has agreed to come out of retirement to give Rangnick his counsel as he attempts to save United’s season following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ’s sacking.
The German has been asked to guide the Reds until the end of the season, when he will then take up a two-year consultancy role.
But Rangnick has refused to rule out remaining on the Old Trafford touchline next season if he is successful.
And he has brought in highly-rated Mense to work on the mentality of the players he has inherited.
Mense, 46, is the father of Paula Magdelena Lense, who has been dating Chelsea forward Werner for the last four years.
He has been described by one Bundesliga insider as “a top mental coach who will help Rangnick get inside the heads of United’s players.”
Now his family will now be torn between supporting the Reds or cheering on Werner’s title-chasing Chelsea.
Mense introduced Paula Magdelena to Werner when he was working at Leipzig and the German international was the team’s star player.
He moved into sports psychology after a journeyman career that did not progress beyond the German second tier.
Mense began at Dynamo Dresden before switching to Leipzig in 2015 to work with Rangnick for the first time.
Solskjaer was sacked after a miserable start to the season culminated in a 4-1 defeat at Watford last month.
Michael Carrick took charge for the next three games – and guided United into the last 16 of the Champions League as well as taking four points from two Premier League games against Arsenal and Chelsea.
Carrick rejected the chance to work under Rangnick, but first-team coaches Mike Phelan and Kieran McKenna are still at the club.
