New interim Manchester United manager has given his opinion on Luke Shaw in the past and it does not bode well for the Red Devils and England left-back.

Rangnick is set to be appointed United’s interim boss until the end of the season, with an agreement to stay on for two years in a consultancy role afterwards.

It is not finalised yet, as the deal is subject to Rangnick’s current club Lokomotiv Moscow agreeing to release him from his contract, however, he is expected to be in charge for the visit of Arsenal on 2 December.

Shaw may be more worried than most about his imminent arrival, given the comments he made about him in September 2020 when asked where United should be strengthening in the transfer market.

The German singled out Shaw as a player that should be replaced because he is not up to the standard required.

‘I think that on the market there are quite a few interesting young central defenders,’ Rangnick said in September 2020.

‘I also think that they could do with a left-back, I know they have Luke Shaw but I’m not so sure if he’s on the same kind of level that you need to be for a club like Manchester United.’

Plenty has changed since then, with Shaw having an impressive last season and an excellent campaign with England at Euro 2020.

However, his form so far this campaign has been little short of woeful so it is not clear where Rangnick’s opinion on him stands right now.

Brazil international Alex Telles has also arrived at the club since Rangnick made those comments on Shaw, so the German may no longer feel like a new signing is needed, simply to bring in the former Porto man.
