PS3 and PS Vita store officially closing but you can still download your games

Sony has admitted that it’s shutting down the PlayStation Store for old hardware, but you won’t lose the games you bought.

Following a report that it was planning to shut down the PlayStation Store for its older consoles and the complete removal of the old website, Sony has finally admitted that that’s exactly what it’s doing.

In an announcement made on the official PlayStation website, Sony confirms that the stores for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable will close on July 2, with the PlayStation Vita store to follow suit on August 27.

This means that all digital content will be removed so you’ll no longer be able to purchase anything for those three consoles. This applies to games, movies, DLC, and in-game purchases.

Back when the initial report broke, Sony was met with staunch criticism, particularly from video game preservationists as there are many games that are currently only available via these stores.

Their removal means they will become permanently inaccessible barring any potential re-releases, with prospective players either needing to turn to eBay (where second-hand physical copies risk being sold for obscenely high prices) or to emulation.

The one bright spot, however, is that anything you have already bought from the old stores can still be accessed and downloaded even after their closure, just by accessing the Download List.

This also means that if you had to delete games to free up storage space, you don’t need to hastily run back and download them again ASAP to make sure you keep them.

As such, it may be worth spending the next four to five months scouring the store and buying any games that grab your fancy before they’re lost to the ether.
