A HEAVILY pregnant woman lost her unborn baby girl after a drunk driver ploughed into a crowd of revellers at a baby shower.
Guests had gathered on a cordoned-off street outside the family home in Veracruz, Mexico, decorated with pink and white balloons, to celebrate the imminent arrival of Esmeralda Munoz’s baby girl.
But the party of 15 ended in tragedy when a man in a pick-up truck smashed into the crowd at high speed, running over at least seven people and a dog.
The 54-year-old ploughed into a parked car before the truck came to a stop.
Six women and a young child were taken to hospital after the horror crash, which left tables and chairs strewn across the street.
Mrs Munoz’s mother believes her daughter lost the baby from the shock of seeing her relatives run over and also fears the driver, who was due to appear in court on Thursday, will be released from jail too soon.
“They told us that the man was going to get out in 48 hours and was only going to pay for injuries that could be verified,” she said.
“I have my 11-year-old daughter bedridden, she can’t even move.”
The baby’s great-grandmother, who was injured in the crash, described the loss of the baby, named Yazmin, as a “tragedy”.
“We waited for it with great joy – it was the arrival of my second great-granddaughter and she did not arrive alive. It is a tragedy,” she told Mexican newspaper La Silla Rota.
Neighbours rushed to detain the driver, believed to be a neighbour of the family, before emergency services arrived at the scene in the major Mexican port city on Monday, September 28.
A clown, who had been hired to entertain the children at the party, told Mexico News Daily: “The person drove at us at full speed. If it had not been for the white car, he would have killed us.”
Despite not being hit by the truck, the mum-to-be started experiencing stomach pain the next day, and Yazmin was declared dead in hospital just days before she was due to be born.
A wake was held at the family home the following day, while Mrs Munoz remained in hospital.
Authorities in Mexico said a man named Mario ‘N’ had been detained, who was “allegedly responsible for running over seven people during a party”.
A picture shared by the Ministry of Public Security in Veracruz shows the alleged driver with multiple cuts to his face and blood on his clothes.
