The Communications Director, Enugu Catholic Diocese, Rev. Fr. Benjamin Achi, has claimed that Bishop Hassan Kukah is being attacked because he is a Christian leader.
Recall that Kukah in a Christmas Day message accused the President Muhammadu Buhari administration of nepotism.
The Bishop also stated that there would have been a coup if another president had acted like Buhari.
Kukah’s message drew reactions from the presidency and various Muslim groups, who accused him of targeting Islam and Muslims in Nigeria with his Christmas message.
The Bishop has since denied targeting Muslims with his statement, stressing that the message was purely meant to criticise government policies.
A group known as the Muslim Solidarity Forum had also asked the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese to apologise to the entire Muslim Ummah over his recent comments against Islam.
The acting chairman of the Muslim forum, Professor Isa Muhammad Maishanu described Kukah’s comment as “malicious”.
Reacting to the Muslim forum comments, Rev. Fr. Achi asked those attacking him to point out the lies in Kukah’s Christmas homily.
He wondered why the Muslim group resorted to threat when all Kukah said about the state of the nation were facts.
“Those who have been crying foul about his message have not been able to say, ‘you said this and this and they are not true’. Their problem is why this person should be speaking from his own position because he is a Christian leader.
“But we are not talking about religion here. We are talking about good governance. We are talking about representing the goals, the aspirations and the interests of the people”, NAN quoted him as saying.
The diocesan director reminded leaders of their obligation to be the voice of the people when things are not going well.
Achi insisted that Kukah had the constitutional right to air his opinion on matters affecting the people.
