Pokimane says Twitch was right to ban her for streaming Avatar episodes

Pokimane was briefly banned from Twitch after streaming full episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender, something she fully agrees with.

After the hot tub and ASMR trends, the big new thing on Twitch is to just stream whole episodes of TV shows, which unsurprisingly Twitch and Amazon aren’t very keen on.

It looks like this trend could be dead in the water already as Imane ‘Pokimane’ Anys, one of Twitch’s top 10 streamers and one who has generally avoided controversy compared to some of her peers, was banned for streaming episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The ban only lasted for a couple of days and Pokimane not only thinks her ban was fair, but that somebody would be banned eventually for participating in this new meta.

‘Just to be clear, I’m not surprised and I don’t think this is unfair. It was inevitable that publishers would take action, on me or someone else, during this react meta,’ she wrote on Twitter.

She doesn’t say exactly what she’ll do next, but we can safely assume she won’t be streaming any more TV shows, lest she be hit with another ban.

It’s honestly surprising anyone would even risk attempting something like this. As Pokimane says, publishers would obviously not allow their content to be streamed by someone else, to a potentially giant audience, for free.

However, it seems the whole situation has only reignited criticisms towards Twitch for its DMCA rules, specifically regarding how some find the rules confusing and that Twitch is inconsistent with who it bans.

The responses to Pokimane’s statement are a mixture of support and criticism, with some equating what she did to piracy and that she should have been banned for longer, if not permanently.
