The UK’s largest electrical retailer recorded record-breaking sales for the recent PlayStation 5 (PS5) pre-order, as the coveted console sold out in just 10 minutes and recorded nearly 90,000 more pre-registrations than Xbox.
The recent Xbox Series S and Series X pre-orders came six days after PS5 and was also a sell-out event, smashing pre-order expectations – but was pipped to the post just 10 minutes behind PS5.
Currys PC World’s new research reveals that nine in 10 (88 per cent) of existing PlayStation owners, and 68 per cent of existing Xbox owners have, or are considering, pre-ordering the latest consoles, only reinforcing the excitement around these launches.
However, when it comes to loyalty, the research suggests that Xbox One owners may be switching sides, with over 51 per cent stating they are considering purchasing the PS5, whereas just 22 per cent of PlayStation owners would consider purchasing the Xbox Series S or X.
Despite PlayStation’s popularity, Xbox is not backing down and is fighting back for their loyal fans with new next gen features, including the Microsoft gaming studio, a new subscription model and the Xbox All Access payment service, with the latter proving particularly popular with 64 per cent of future users.
Currys PC World have also seen that the Xbox X series, though more expensive, has been the model of choice.
2020 has been dubbed the ‘Year of Gaming’ by the electrical retailer, following record breaking gaming sales which saw an 80 per cent increase against 2019.
New product and console launches, and the Covid-19 lockdown, has meant more people than ever before have ventured into gaming, looking to buy consoles and equipment to keep themselves entertained.
Recent conversation around PlayStation and Xbox has also helped Currys PC World see a 124 per cent year-on-year sales increase as gamers flocked to currys.co.uk to get the latest devices.
Nick Hayden, Head of Gaming, Currys PC World said: “It was interesting to see the console pre-order battle play out and for PlayStation 5 to take the lead, but I wouldn’t underestimate the benefits of Xbox Series X which were not far behind PlayStation in pre-order sales.
“The enhanced SSD capabilities, compact design and advanced graphics offer an exciting gaming experience to their fans, and those looking for a new console experience.
“The battle isn’t over either as we move towards launch stage, there are more announcements of games to be made and 2021 is looking to be even better than 2020 for gamers.”

The scheme helps Brits spread the cost of each item purchased and can defer the cost of the repayment for up to 12 months. When the year is over, customers can choose to pay the amount in full or make monthly repayments.
