Phil Neville hailed ‘sensational’ Bruno Fernandes after Manchester United beat Aston Villa to join Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side clinched a 2-1 victory over Villa on Friday night thanks to Anthony Martial’s first-half header and Fernandes’ second-half penalty.

Fernandes, who joined Manchester United this time last year from Sporting Lisbon, has now scored 16 goals in all competitions during the 2020-21 campaign.

The Red Devils’ victory sees them join defending champions Liverpool at the top of the table, with both teams on 33 points.

Speaking after United’s victory over Villa, Neville was asked about Fernandes and told Premier League productions: ‘Sensational!

‘The only thing he needs now is trophies, to go along with those goals and assists and that impact.

‘When he joined 12 months ago, Manchester United were nowhere near Liverpool, Man City, even Chelsea, and now they’re joint-top of the Premier League.

‘I think it’s a lot to do with him [Fernandes]. That’s the impact he’s had. He looks like a Manchester United captain and he’s a real leader on the pitch.’

Fernandes, meanwhile, said after the Villa win: ‘We knew they [Aston Villa] play really well. They have qualities and are doing well in the league.

‘We did well and created more chances than before but scored less goals. The most important thing is three points though.

‘When you dream to play in the Premier League you think of this – the Boxing day and the first day of new year.

‘Everyone wants to be with family but this year was a different one and hopefully next year can be a better one.’

Manchester United face rivals Man City in the EFL Cup on Wednesday before welcoming Watford to Old Trafford for a FA Cup clash.
