Petr Cech claims Kepa Arrizabalaga’s reaction to Edouard Mendy’s arrival has been ‘absolutely magnificent’ but believes Chelsea’s new signing is a ‘complete goalkeeper’.

Following Kepa’s poor performances last season, Frank Lampard asked Chelsea’s hierarchy to sign a new goalkeeper this summer to challenge the Spaniard.

Ajax’s Andre Onana and Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak were both on Chelsea’s shortlist but the west London club ended up agreeing a £22 million deal with Rennes for Mendy.

Cech, who spent two years at Rennes before joining Chelsea in 2004, played a key role in recommending the Senegal international to Lampard.

Kepa, meanwhile, has made just one appearance since Mendy joined Stamford Bridge but in an interview with The Times, Cech has praised the Spaniard’s reaction to the arrival of a new goalkeeper and says his response has been ‘absolutely magnificent’.

Cech also highlighted the qualities Mendy possesses which convinced him to recommend the deal to Lampard.

‘I was asked together with the goalkeeping department and the scouting department to prepare documents for the manager and give my advice on who would be my choice,’ Cech told The Times.

‘Edouard was not the only one on the list, but we had him on top because of his qualities and the knowledge we had about him. The manager and the club decided to go with our advice, so that’s how he ended up here.

‘He has brought exactly what we wanted him to, which is his presence, his calmness and the way he does things on the pitch with precision and clear decision-making.

‘He’s a very positive person and he transmits that in the way he plays.

‘His main strength is aerial duels. He’s very strong in coming for crosses and has big presence in the box.

‘He’s tall, 6ft 5in, so he uses his frame for coming out and blocking shots. And his distribution is really good. Overall he’s a complete goalkeeper.’
