Peter Schmeichel believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the right man to lead Manchester United and hails the ‘progression’ he has seen in the Red Devils since the Norwegian took charge.

Solskjaer led United to sixth and third-place finishes in the Premier League in his first two seasons at the club, before guiding them to a runners-up spot in the league last term.

After adding Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane to their already star-studded squad in the summer, United currently find themselves in fourth position in the Premier League table.

But after losing three of their last five matches in all competitions, sections of the fanbase have called for the board to sack the United boss, with growing concern over whether Solskjaer is the right man to take the club forward.

However, Schmeichel thinks that the 48-year-old is doing a better job at Old Trafford than any other manager that is currently available could.

‘I think he’s working quite well, it’s working out quite well for the club as well,’ the former United goalkeeper told TalkSPORT.

‘I don’t think there was a question about how many changes that needed to be done once he got the job and he didn’t get the job on a full-time to begin with. That work is far from finished, I think he’s doing really well.

‘It’s headline talk, Ole out, yeah that’s fair enough but give me another name. Who can go in change the fortunes of Man Utd in a split second? I don’t see that person out there. I am very confident with Ole.

‘He’s got the Man Utd DNA, that’s engraved into him. He understands what the club is, not just today, but in five years and that’s so important, that continuity. I see progression in what Ole is doing.’

Following their dramatic 2-1 victory over Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday night, United will be hoping to continue their progress when they welcome Everton to Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday.
