Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel admits he was baffled by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tactics during the side’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Old Trafford.

A penalty from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the second half gave the Gunners a deserved three points at Old Trafford to leave Solskjaer’s side without a win in their first four matches at home.

Solskjaer selected a diamond shape in midfield in order to accomodate Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay and Fred in the same system.

However, despite outnumbering Arsenal in midfield, United were overrun in the middle of the park and they only improved once Solskjaer abandoned the system in favour of a more attacking 4-2-3-1.

Solskjaer started with a 4-1-2-1-2 as it had impressed in a 5-0 win against RB Leipzig just five days earlier but Schmeichel says he was confused by the Norwegian’s decision.

‘I didn’t think it was a great performance by any measure. The team selection wasn’t to my taste,’ Schmeichel told BeIN Sports.

‘I didn’t think right from the beginning that it was the right combination of players.

‘I couldn’t work out what system we were playing and I couldn’t work out why we were making such a big change in system. It clearly didn’t work.

‘We were very, very slow in midfield. Turning the game was non-existent. Once we started our attacks we had far too many touches on the ball and the movement wasn’t great either.

‘Arsenal didn’t make a single mistake. The pressure on the ball was perfect throughout the 94 minutes.’

United take on Everton at Goodison Park next weekend and the pressure is already building on Solskjaer’s position ahead of the trip to Merseyside.

The Red Devils have just seven points from their first six matches and Mauricio Pochettino is known to be keen on a return to management.
