They’ve been married for almost six years and have two beautiful children together, but Peter Andre and his wife Emily would never have met if it hadn’t been for a health crisis.
It was back in 2010 that Pete – who turns 48 today – found himself undergoing emergency surgery in Cornwall to treat agonising kidney stones.
And it was through his urologist consultant, Dr Ruaraidh MacDonagh, that the then 36 year old met and fell in love with his medical student daughter Emily, then 20.
Dishing on the unusual circumstances that brought them together, he previously told Cornwall Live : “It’s the most bizarre thing. I had to have an emergency operation on a kidney in Taunton. I wasn’t even in the area but I was transferred there and the on-call consultant was Emily’s dad.
“I was so grateful that I said, ‘if there’s anything I can ever do…’. I later got him a couple of tickets for the Plymouth show, but he couldn’t make it so his wife Rebecca came along with their daughter, Emily.
“We had a bit of a laugh and I thought, ‘oh they’re really nice people’. As time went on, Emily and I realised we had feelings for each other and two years after meeting at Plymouth Pavilions we were married.”
Ever the gentleman, Pete first got Dr MacDonagh’s permission to date his daughter, but he almost blew his attempts to woo her with a smooth move that went very wrong.
The Mysterious Girl singer – who was previously married to Katie Price – thought it would be a good idea to turn up to her halls of residence at Bristol University in a flashy Lamborghini – but it wasn’t well received.
Last year Emily, 31, told ITV’s Loose Women: “That doesn’t really float my boat, so I think he misjudged it slightly. Because I couldn’t care less about cars or anything. But he didn’t do it again, that’s for sure!”
Pete admitted that he’d been desperate to pull out all the stops after realising the true depths of his feelings for Emily.
“It was just foolish and I don’t know, I think in my thirties, I think I was having a mid-life crisis. I really do. In my forties, I just wouldn’t do that now,” he said.
“I really liked her and it took my so long to like her. Let me rephrase that, it took me so long to realise what I was feeling.
“Once I asked and got approval from her dad, I had to because he was my friend, I thought, ‘I can’t stuff this up’. So I have to do what I can.”
The couple kept their relationship a secret until 2012 when she finally appeared on his reality show.
The following year Emily fell pregnant with their son Theo, and Pete popped the question just days before his birth.
Daughter Amelia followed in 2014, and the couple finally said ‘I do’ at Mamhead House in Exeter on July 11, 2015.
And unlike with his £1million wedding to ex-wife Katie Price, this time there wasn’t a glass carriage in sight, with the pair opting for a classy ‘do at Exeter’s luxe Mamhead House.
“It’s been the most fantastic day of our lives – we’ve loved every moment,” Pete, 44, told OK! magazine at the time.
“I couldn’t have wished for a better day. I’ve married the love of my life and I couldn’t be happier.”
But cruel comments about their 17-year age gap hit Emily hard, with the NHS doctor revealing that’s why she refused to have social media for several years.
“The downside [of fame] is people being nasty,” she told OK! magazine.
“In the past I’ve read people criticising me and Pete, whether it’s the age difference or our appearance, and I find it hard when people say I’m too young to be with him – my skin is not thick enough and I find it very upsetting.
“He’s in his forties and he looks great. He still comes home to me and gives me cuddles.”
