Manchester United legend Paul Scholes tore into Anthony Martial before the side’s clash against Istanbul Basaksehir, claiming the Frenchman is ‘not a good centre forward’.

Martial has scored just twice so far this term, in what has been a disappointing start to the season for the France international.

The former Monaco ace managed an impressive 23 goals in all competitions last term after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reinstated him into a central position following Romelu Lukaku’s departure.

Scholes had praised Martial at the end of last season, claiming he was ‘world class’ before backtracking on those comments in October by stating the Frenchman had ‘conned him’.

And Scholes has gone one step further by claiming Martial is ‘moody’ and ‘not a good centre forward’.

‘Martial’s strength… we’ve spoke about him being a centre forward, he’s not a good centre forward,’ Scholes told BT Sport.

‘I don’t think he’s got that movement for centre forward, he’s not good with his back to goal.

‘But when he gets the ball and he’s facing someone, it’s a different position. You see him going at someone.’

Asked if he is a player who relies on confidence, Scholes replied: ‘Definitely. He’s a little bit moody and you see him.

‘But once he gets a goal there’s every chance he’ll go on to get three or four.’

Martial started on the left of a front three against Istanbul Basaksehir, with Edinson Cavani given his full debut in a central role.

United took the lead when Bruno Fernandes smashed home from the edge of the area and he grabbed his second of the game when he capitalised on a spill form the goalkeeper to tap home.

Martial’s performance was much improved following Saturday’s dire display in a 1-0 win against West Brom and United were 3-0 up when Marcus Rashford converted from the penalty spot, having been brought down as he raced through on goal.
