Paul Scholes believes Manchester United are the clear favourites to win this season’s Europa League and should ‘cruise’ past their next opponents AC Milan.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side cantered through the group stages of the competition and eased into the last 16 following a comprehensive 4-0 aggregate win over Real Sociedad, despite being held to a goalless draw in the second leg at Old Trafford last night.

United have drawn the Serie A giants in the next round and will come face to face with their former talismanic striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as well as Diogo Dalot who joined the Rossoneri on a season-long loan in the summer.

Milan are a much improved outfit under the management of Stefano Pioli this season and were leading the Scudetto race until recently, but speaking ahead of the draw Scholes was confident his old side would have more than enough quality to progress.

He told BT Sport: ‘Man United have the best squad left in the competition. We thought that last year, but obviously Sevilla were around then and we know what they’re like in the Europa League, so they found it difficult.

‘This is a great chance for United to win the Europa League, there could be some great games, but there could be some rubbish games – let’s wait and see.

‘Man United are much better than Arsenal and Tottenham. I think United would cruise past Milan.

Although ultra-confident, Scholes admits United and their senior players need to find something extra to finally add silverware to the club’s trophy cabinet following four successive semi-final defeats in various competitions.

He added: ‘It’s four semi-finals if you count the one this year, which isn’t great. You need to go to that next level now, he’s seen them do well, get to a certain place, get to second in the league and then fall away.

‘They’ve got to find that extra bit of quality. The big players in the big games have to step up and they’ve been unable to do that at this moment in time.

‘But they have to do it now for Manchester United to go to that next level, win titles, win cups, whatever it may  be – these players need to step up now.’
