Manchester United are likely to be on the hunt for a new manager in the summer with Paul Scholes highlighting Antonio Conte as a potential candidate despite previous comments from Gary Neville
Paul Scholes has highlighted Antonio Conte as an ideal managerial target for Manchester United despite Gary Neville being adamant the Italian “is not the right fit”.
Ralf Rangnick is currently in charge at Old Trafford, but only on an interim basis.
Beyond the current season there is doubt as to who will step in, with the German set to have a say in who succeeds him.
Several names have been touted with United keen to get their next decision right following heavy criticism in recent months.
There are a lack of obvious candidates currently out of a job meaning the Premier League giants may have to secure the services of a manager currently under employment.
Conte would fall into that category having recently taken over at Tottenham.
The Italian, who won the Premier League with Chelsea in the past, has had an instant impact, furthering his appeal.
Scholes claims Conte is in the same bracket as leading lights Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp.
Mauricio Pochettino would be the former United star’s other pick.
“We know that Conte is up there with [Pep] Guardiola, [Jurgen] Klopp and [Thomas] Tuchel. We know that, that’s a given.
“So I think Man United should be looking for someone like that. Tottenham fans won’t like me saying it, but I think they could probably still get him [in the summer].
“You can already see Conte’s getting a bit frustrated with his players, he wants other stuff. I think Conte could do something special here.
“He’s got the pedigree to do it. Will we be able to get him in? I don’t know.
“I think Pochettino is a brilliant manager, I love what he does and I love what he did at Tottenham.”
Conte had been available when the pressure was mounting on Solskjaer earlier this season.
His impressive CV lended itself to a job like the one at Old Trafford, but Neville was convinced the Italian was not the right man.
He said on Sky Sports: “Conte’s available but I wouldn’t bring him to Manchester United. I wouldn’t bring him here now, I wouldn’t.
“I don’t think Antonio Conte is a fit for Manchester United. I don’t think he’s a fit.”
Neville had concerns over the manager’s longevity and wanted to avoid the short tenures experienced by the likes of Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal.
