Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has urged Fred to ‘constantly tell’ the likes of Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood to make runs in behind during matches.

Scholes was highly critical of Fred and Scott McTominay after United’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday, claiming the pair were not helping the team in an attacking sense.

However, after having some days to reflect on the defeat, Scholes feels the likes of Rashford and Greenwood could do more work off the ball to give Fred more options when United are in possession in midfield.

‘Players need to know their strengths,’ Scholes told BT Sport.

‘Marcus’s strength is running in behind, Mason’s strength is running in behind because he’s got the pace. If you’ve got time on the ball, you should be able to play that ball over the top for them.

‘If you’re a central midfield player for Manchester United you should be capable of it. I’m not sure if Fred is; I think he might be.

‘Fred in that situation he should be telling Marcus & Mason anyway: ‘Do not come towards me one bit.

‘I played with great centre forwards, Robin van Persie, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Andy Cole, all players that ran in behind, you didn’t need to tell them to. The one player that I had to constantly tell to was Nani. You had to keep telling him.

‘It looks like Marcus is the same, it looks like Mason is the same. You’re the quick players in the team, you need to stretch the team.

‘Okay if it’s not on then Fred can’t do the pass or the pass is not on but then that creates space for Pogba and Fernandes because the back four are pinned back it’s all about knowing your strengths and sometimes demanding more. Fred needs to demand more or whoever has time on the ball in that central area must demand more from the central players.’
