Carrick calls for focus after emotional few days at Man Utd

Paul Scholes tore into Manchester United ahead of their crunch clash against Villarreal, and said he’d be “embarrassed” to be caretaker manager Michael Carrick after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked.

United have been under performing for some time, and Solskjaer’s reign finally came to an end shortly after his side were humiliated 4-1 Watford.

Carrick was just one of the many staff working under Solskjaer that has kept their job, and the former United midfielder has now stepped into the caretaker role while the club search for a permanent replacement.

Scholes didn’t hold back as he delivered a furious rant aimed at the United board, questioning their decisions while pointing fingers at Solskjaer’s coaching staff – believing they should have also gone.

Scholes spoke about the sacking of Solskjaer on BT Sport ahead of kick-off against Villarreal, and said: “I think the feeling at the club is a lot better from when he first came.

“We know now and thought at the time that he probably couldn’t take us to that next level that’s required. He got us to second in the Premier league, numerous semi-finals and a final last season.

“Unfortunately he just couldn’t make that final step. It’s difficult, you think of Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City, there’s a lot of quality in this Premier League, whoever comes now it won’t be easy to get Manchester United to where they want to be.

“You asked the question of whether they’ll be any better tonight, but it’s the same people running the team. It’s the same people given massive responsibility to put the team out on the pitch, it’s more Kieran McKenna, Michael Carrick, who have prepared the team.

Michael Carrick should have also been sacked according to Paul Scholes

“Ole gives them the responsibility to do that. Why that changes now, I don’t know.

“Four weeks ago that Liverpool game, that was the time we knew. We knew Ole was going to go.

“Then, the people above had to prepare the next batch, the next manager, the next batch of staff. I’d be embarrassed to be on the staff now after what happened to Ole.

“Being on the staff and preparing the team for tonight, they all should have gone. Ole trusted them each week to get the team prepared for games. They’ve let the club down, the players down, as much as Ole has.”

So far it has only been Solskjaer that has been sacked, with the entirety of the United coaching staff still intact despite the woeful performances of late, with the Norwegian bowing out whilst taking all of the responsibility.

Carrick was a former teammate of Scholes, but the BT Sport pundit was brutally honest in his assessment of his former club and old midfield partner, with United currently in an awful state.
