Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford share the penalty responsibilities after confusion during Manchester United’s draw with Wolves.

Pogba missed a penalty during the game, which finished 1-1, and pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were baffled to see the midfielder take it ahead of Marcus Rashford.

The United striker scored from the spot in their last game against Chelsea, but after a brief discussion with Pogba, the midfielder stepped up.

Neville fumed with the apparent debate between Pogba and Rashford, but Solskjaer explained that was expected.

‘The two of them are the designated penalty shooters,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘It’s up to them there and then to decide that “this is mine”.

‘Sometimes players feel they are confident enough – Paul has scored so many penalties for us, today Patricio made a good save.’

Asked if United would now change their penalty routine, Solskjaer replied: ‘Not at all. The two have been very confident before – the other week Marcus scored a goal but Paul was confident. I like players to be confident.’

After hearing Solskjaer’s explanation, Carragher called on the United manager to step up and tell Pogba he was off penalty duties.

He said: ‘That will never work. You will get that on pitch conversation every time United get a penalty.

‘You don’t need that conversation. The manager needs to be stronger.

‘Or Paul Pogba should think of the team and say Rashford is the best penalty taker. It’s cost them two points tonight.’
