Paul Merson heaped praise on Thiago Silva’s ‘outstanding’ performance in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Burnley and claimed the ‘Rolls-Royce’ defender had Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes in his ‘pocket’ at Turf Moor.

The Blues sealed their second away win of the Premier League campaign thanks to goals from Hakim Ziyech, Kurt Zouma and Timo Werner and Silva barely put a foot wrong against Burnley’s physical front two of Wood and Barnes.

Eyebrows were raised when Chelsea brought in Silva on a free transfer in the summer, considering he celebrated his 36th birthday last month, and the Brazilian had a nightmare league debut in the side’s 3-3 draw with West Brom.

But Merson is convinced Silva is the real deal and believes the veteran centre-back passed a big test with his display at Turf Moor, a notoriously difficult ground for players new to the English top flight.

‘Thiago Silva, you thought tester today, Burnley away with freezing cold gale force wind,’ the ex-Arsenal and England midfielder said on Sky Sports News.

‘Rolls-Royce. Absolutely outstanding.

‘Had both players in his pocket. Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes didn’t go near him in the end he was that dominant.’

Frank Lampard was delighted with Chelsea’s showing at a ‘tough’ ground and said it felt like a ‘nice step forward’ for his team.

‘I thought it was a very complete performance,’ the Chelsea head coach said.

‘It’s a tough place to come here and play, they make it very difficult.

‘You know you have to defend your box well, you have to be very strong with the first and second balls.

‘I wanted that to be one focus and the other to be to keep developing the way we play on the ball. That is what really pleased me today.

‘Some of the passing and the movement in the team from minute one, to the end of the game was very good.

‘It feels like a nice step forward. I keep talking about the work we need to do, we are nowhere near the end of the road with that, so the performance was a really solid win.’
