Paul Merson explains why Kieran Tierney should be handed Arsenal captaincy

Paul Merson says Kieran Tierney deserves to be made Arsenal captain because he’s the one player who gives his all and would ‘run through a brick wall’ for his side.

Arsenal’s tally of 14 points from their first 14 Premier League games represents their worst start to a campaign in 46 years.

Mikel Arteta is facing increased pressure with his side hovering just four points above the relegation zone.

One of the shining lights of the season has been left-back Tierney, whose effort and commitment can’t be questioned.

Meanwhile, captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored a meagre three league goals this term and looked forlorn in recent weeks.

Merson believes the Gunners are embroiled in a relegation dogfight and will need more characters like Tierney to survive.

‘I would give it to Tierney as he’d run through a brick wall for you,’ the Arsenal legend told Sky Sports.

‘He’s the one player I look at who gives everything, and I’d give him the captaincy.

‘There’s a way of showing how much you care, and the relationship he is building with Bukayo Saka down the left looks decent.

Arsenal need that all around the pitch, and at the moment they’re in a relegation battle.

‘For me, I don’t see them doing what Burnley are capable of, rolling their sleeves up. Arsenal are searching for the perfect win but they need to start grinding out results.’
