Paul Merson has criticised Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for ‘bringing absolutely nothing’ to the Arsenal team and questioned the direction Mikel Arteta’s side are heading in.

The Gunners are languishing in 12th place in the Premier League table after a stuttering start to the season.

Finding the back of the net has proven to be a major problem for north Londoners, who have gone seven hours without a goal from open play in the league.

Captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is also on a dry run in front of goal and was ineffective in his favoured central striking role during the 0-0 draw with Leeds United last weekend.

And Gunners legend Merson hit out at the 31-year-old’s poor recent form and admitted his former side deserve their place in mid-table.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is bringing absolutely nothing to the party at the moment,’ Merson told Sky Sports. ‘He played central [against Leeds] and he was ineffective as he was before.

‘You watch them and think they are a middle-of-the-table team.’

Merson doesn’t feel that Arsenal are proficient in either defence or attack and can’t see what Arteta is attempting to do with his team.

He added: ‘Where are Arsenal going? People say you can see what Arteta is trying to do, but I’m not sure.

‘I watched Leeds and you can see what they are doing. Some of their passing and movement, you could tell they have worked on it, but I do not see that with Arsenal.

‘Where are they strong? They are not dominant at the back. Thomas Partey is a good player and they have missed him – he should make a difference when he’s back – but up front they do not get the ball out wide to the wingers.

‘Aubameyang plays up front and does not touch the ball. There is no running off the ball.’
