Jamie Carragher heaped praise on Liverpool youngster Tyler Morton for his ‘outstanding’ performance against AC Milan.

Liverpool recorded a 2-1 win at the San Siro on Tuesday night as they became the first English side to win all six games of a Champions League group phase.

Morton, who only made his full debut in the 2-0 win at home to Porto last month, put in an impressive display and left former Red Carragher waxing lyrical about him at full-time.

The 19-year-old played in the same youth team as Carragher’s son with the former Red still in contact with Morton’s family and he revealed he sent the player’s father a text upon seeing the teamsheet.

Carragher said on CBS: ‘When he’s come on the team sheet as starting I’ve said “Wow, delighted for you and the family” [the reply said] “Wow, can’t believe it, thank you.” So, that’s his Dad.

‘My son was at Liverpool, they go in really young now aged six, so they go in and I’ve watched that group of players, there was another lad on the bench James Norris who never came on, so I’ve seen them all come right through the system and they’re at the age now 18/19 where they have to make their name in the game.

‘I thought Tyler Morton was outstanding in midfield, he was fantastic, for a teenage player, playing for Liverpool who are one of the biggest clubs in European football and your home town club, in the San Siro – the San Siro is one of the those.

‘I played there only once at it was in my late twenties and for me it was “This is amazing, this is unbelievable,” he’s only 18/19.

‘To play in a game where they’ve won, not just play, and put in the performance he did and I’m delighted for him and the family.’

The No.80’s performance also went down well with his manager with Jurgen Klopp saying it was a ‘big pleasure’ to watch from the touchline.

‘I don’t want to make his life any more complicated than it is already, playing at such a young age for a club like Liverpool in a game like this with a performance like this,’ Klopp said.

‘I think we should all calm down but it was really good tonight and a big pleasure to watch the boy playing.

‘The football brain he showed tonight was absolutely exceptional.

‘If you are technically on that level and he obviously is and you have such good orientation then you have time for good stuff.

‘On top of that he defended incredibly well with the other boys.’
