Outlander's Sam Heughan can't wait to be part of new Channel 4 crime thriller

Outlander’s Sam Heughan has said he can’t wait to be part of a new eight-part crime thriller on Channel 4.

The actor was announced for the series, which has the working title of Suspect, alongside James Nesbitt, Sex Education’s Anne-Marie Duff, and Loki’s Richard E. Grant.

Sam was announced to play Ryan, the godfather of dead girl Christina (Imogen King). She is the daughter of James Nesbitt’s character veteran detective Danny Frater.

In the show Danny turns up at the hospital mortuary for a routine ID check and is devastated when the corpse turns out to be Christina.

According to the post-mortem, she’s taken her own life, but Danny reckons something is amiss.

As he meets up with her partner Nicola, her best friend Maia, her business partner Jaisal, godfather Ryan, her mentor Harry and her mother Susannah, the story unwinds.

Joely Richardson, Ben Miller, Niamh Algar, Antonia Thomas, and Sacha Dhawan also star.

Sam said of his new role: “Excited to be part of this stellar cast! What a production! @Channel4.”

James added: “I could relate to Danny, with his flaws, vulnerabilities and the devastating situation he faces, from the very first moment I picked up the script.

“Each episode of Suspect is an intensely theatrical double-hander, a psychological battle of wits between Danny and another character who may know something about his daughter’s untimely death, and I really can’t wait to lock horns with my fellow cast members and to lead this incredible array of acting talent.”

Caitriona Balfe was thrilled for Sam and said: “Whooohooo congratulations!!!!”

And fellow Outlander Richard Rankin added: “Yes mate!”

And fans were thrilled too with one saying: “Sounds great! Happy for you. Now to figure out how to watch it in the US.”

Another said: “Given this stellar cast which includes world wide fan favourites I’m hoping this will be viewable in the United States at some point.”
