Oscar De La Hoya apologises for drinking before commentating on Jake Paul card

Oscar De La Hoya has apologised for drinking before commentating on Saturday night.

The Mexican was on duty for the Frank Mir vs Steve Cunningham undercard fight before Jake Paul’s win over Ben Askren.

De La Hoya is looking to return to the ring at the age of 48 and has stepped up his training. He is set to fight on July 3 – although no opponent has yet been finalised.

Before that though he found himself on commentary having had a few drinks, which soon became apparent.

At one point he said he was “a little hush puppy in the Snoop Doggy world” among many other things.

The Mexican has since apologised and told DAZN : “First of all, it’s the Triller effect. Triller’s doing it huge there.

“They’re combining music, entertainment, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Justin Bieber. And it’s the Triller effect. It’s entertainment, and it’s huge. It’s about to do two million homes, it’s trending worldwide.

“I’ve been in beast mode for about six weeks, right? And I got a little into it, I started having a couple of drinks. And then they told me, ‘Hey, why don’t you go and commentate?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, man. Okay, okay.’

“And I got a little carried away, and I apologise. But it’s all good.

“I’m back in beast mode, I’m ready to go, and as you know, I’ve been posting pictures and videos of me training, so I’m going to continue that. It’s on, baby.”

Mir recognised that De La Hoya was not himself upon hearing the commentary and hoped that the former boxer was getting help.

He said on Twitter : “Regarding the commentary during my fight last night. I could be angry and I could laugh too but addiction is no joke, I know.

“I sincerely hope that those around Oscar get him the help he needs. He was a great champion & ambassador for boxing. I’d like to think he can be again.”
