Cases of the new Omicron covid variant are increasing across the UK after it was initially detected in southern Africa.
The strain was first located in the UK in Chelmsford and Nottingham on November 27, 2021. Since then, cases have been rapidly increasing across the country.
Professor Paul Hunter, from the school of medicine at the University of East Anglia, warned that the Omicron variant “is spreading rather more quickly than the Delta variant”.
The UK government are imposing a series of new restrictions and rules in light of the new strain. These include updates to travel rules and changes to mask regulations, as well as a new government push on booster vaccines.

Experts have said that there are early signs that the new Omicron variant could become the dominant strain within months.
It is not yet known if the new variant increases hospital admissions or is impacted by the common vaccines.
