Gary Neville says Manchester United’s recruitment this summer must be right in order for them to hit the ground running next season.

The Red Devils ended their campaign on Wednesday night with a demoralising penalty shootout defeat to Villarreal in the Europa League final in Gdansk.

The loss has piled the pressure on Solskjaer, who has come in for criticism for his in-game management and substitutions in Poland.

While there is not thought to be any question over Solskjaer’s short-term future at the club, he is entering the final year of his deal having failed to win any silverware in his two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford.

And Neville believes the pressure will rightly be put on Solskjaer next season, who he feels must get his recruitment right in order to win silverware next term.

‘You can’t switch performances on and off like a tap,’ said Neville.

‘Haven’t played well for weeks and last night a continuation of the form recently.

‘Pressure will be applied to Ole and the team. Rightly so.

‘Need to get it right this summer and a good start to next season needed badly!’

Solskjaer admitted after the defeat that he wants to add to his squad this summer.

‘We are here now, we need to do better, we need to work better, work harder, cleverer. But as I said two or three players to strengthen the starting XI and the squad all together is important for us to go even further,’ said Solskjaer.

‘Because I’m sure our contenders or challengers will also want to improve and we want to improve as much as we can.’
