Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tells Marcus Rashford to emulate Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has urged Manchester United star Marcus Rashford to emulate Cristiano Ronaldo by scoring more goals from inside the penalty area.

Rashford’s dramatic late goal sent United through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday evening at the expense of PSG.

The England international has scored 14 goals this season – and seven in 16 under Solskjaer – but United’s caretaker boss insists he can improve.

‘I keep battering him [Rashford] with that he also should score as many goals as Rom [Lukaku],’ Solskjaer said on Friday.

‘You should always get those simple tap ins, finishes, like Rom’s scored the last few games.

‘Rashy’s goals sometimes are worldies and he does have a sensational strike of the ball.

‘But you see the change in Cristiano’s goals from when he was young to now, he scores more from inside the box and that’s what Rashy has to improve as well.’

Rashford broke into Manchester United’s first-team in 2016 and has since made over 150 appearances for his boyhood club.

And Solskjaer, who replaced Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford in December, added: ‘We all know all the legends we’ve had at this club that have stayed so long and they’ve been one-club players and we hope that Rashy is going to be one of them.

‘It’s both up to him and us of course. If he keeps producing he’ll stay in the team and that’s up to him to stay in the team.’

Solskjaer, meanwhile, insists he is focused on improving Manchester United rather than his own future at the club.

The Norway legend is expected to be appointed United’s permanent manager at some point before the summer.

‘I love managing these boys, I love working here,’ the Red Devils legend said.

‘As I said so many times, I am just doing the best I can every single day, and if and when… if it comes to a decision to be made, we’ve got to think about that.

‘I am not here to get excited, I am here to do my job. I am contracted to Man United until the end of June.’
