Manchester United are preparing to make a move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez in the January transfer window, according to reports in Spain.

United have been heavily linked with a move for the Spain international, who has been a key part of Diego Simeone’s midfield at Atletico, over the last few years.

And according to AS, United have reignited their interest ahead of the upcoming window and Saul is high on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s shortlist.

The report claims that Atletico’s preference is to sell Thomas Lemar as they want to fund a move for a new striker.

But if Atletico fail to receive an acceptable offer for Lemar, who has struggled to adapt to Simeone’s side, the Spanish club will consider offloading Saul instead.

United had targeted Saul in the summer and Solskjaer’s side were reportedly ready to pay the midfielder’s €150 million (£126m) release clause if Paul Pogba was sold to Real Madrid.

But Solskjaer now remains intent on bolstering his midfield options in January after Pogba’s move to Madrid failed to materialise.

Simeone, however, is desperate to keep Saul as the 25-year-old remains a key figure in his side.
